My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humour, and some style – Maya Angelou
Davina Looker is an English teacher, Natural Hair Blogger and Youtuber living in London.
With a Nigerian father, a disabled British mother and growing up in one of the most culturally diverse cities in the world, Davina developed a strong desire for equality at a young age. Davina believes that regardless of gender, race, religion or sexuality, we are all created equally and should learn to respect each other accordingly.
Due to her beliefs, Davina soon realised that her main passion and motivation in life was helping people, and as a teacher Davina feels privileged to help young people every day. Her main philosophy is simple: no matter where you are from or who you are, you have the potential to be great, therefore Davina seeks to empower young people into believing in themselves both within and outside of the classroom.
Since her big chop in 2009, Davina also developed a passion for natural hair. While completing her teacher training, Davina and her friend Gloria began discussing how they could share their knowledge of natural hair to help others embrace their natural beauty. Therefore in 2014, the London Curls blog was established. Unfortunately, Gloria soon left the London Curls to focus on other projects, however Davina and Gloria still remain good friends.
Although Davina felt scared to go it alone, the positive feedback and knowledge that she was helping others kept her going, and now the London Curls has become much more than just a natural hair blog. As important as it was for Davina to share tips and tutorials on how to care for and embrace natural hair, the London Curls has also become a website that discusses major issues surrounding racism, education and self acceptance, with guest bloggers sharing their views on various issues. Please check out her colorism/shadeism project and the controversial #MenOnNaturalHair project.
Due to the success of the blog and her youtube channel, Davina has been invited to attend and speak at various events regarding both hair and cultural issues. She was lucky enough to visit New York and host a brunch with some of her American followers, and she looks forward to travelling the world and meeting many more likeminded people.
Davina is alway eager to hear other people’s opinions and loves to collaborate on projects. If you would like to work or meet with Davina, please feel free to email her using the email address provided below.
